Sahams are critical points in the birth chart expressed in degrees. These relate to major events or milestones in a person’s life. They are used both in the birth chart and the annual tajika or solar return chart.
Today let us look at some examples of how two sahams namely the Jalapatana (ocean crossing) Saham and the Paradesa (other than your country) saham work in birth charts. Both these sahams are related to going to a foreign country.
What combination of sahams increases the chances of long foreign journeys or foreign settlements? The lord of the Jalapatana Saham and/or the Paradesa saham being connected to the lagna and/or lagna lord, and to the fourth house and/or fourth house lord.

In the chart above, Jalapatana Saham is at 7 Le 21’ and its lord is Sun. Paradesa Saham is at 9 Vi 20’ and its lord is Mercury. Note that both are placed in the fourth house with the Lagna lord Venus. And Sun is the fourth house lord too. Further analysis is needed to see whether this indication is strengthened by the 7th, 9th and 12th lords to cause permanent settlement or simply a long foreign journey. A deeper understanding of the sahams can tell us about the circumstances of this journey.
For example, in the chart above, the Saham lords are placed in friendly signs in the fourth house. This shows that the journey is acceptable and pleasant. Fourth house and Mercury being involved can indicate basic schooling, diplomas and certifications related to foreign lands. Both the tenth lord from Moon and Sun are involved showing the journey could relate to the professions of mother and father. Venus as Lagna lord is involved in this yoga but is located in an enemy sign in Leo, showing that in the new environment the person will make more effort to get the same limelight that they were receiving at home.
